On April 27 and 28, the Bodega Bay community will host its 40th Annual Fisherman's Festival at Westside Park. The theme this year is “40 Years of Fish Tales.” Highlights include a wine tasting booth with over 25 Sonoma County wines, food booths with bbq oysters, fish ‘n chips and clam chowder, live music and entertainment, and artisan vendors from all over California.
The festival began as a celebration of the start of the Salmon fishing season and the annual Blessing of the Fleet. The Blessing will take place Sunday morning, as decorated boats parade out of the harbor to receive a blessing from local clergy.
Saturday will feature the popular wooden boat challenge where participating teams build a vessel and then compete in a boat race. Beginning at 10 am, each team of four people has three hours to design and build a boat with no power tools. An expected 2500 spectators will watch the boats launch and cheer them as they race around the course.
Saturday’s line-up also includes a golf tournament at The Links at Bodega Harbour. There will be a drawing on Sunday for raffle prizes from local merchants hosted by the Bodega Bay Area Chamber of Commerce.
The festival is great fun for kids, with a play area for face painting, spin paintings, games, a touch tank tide pool, pony rides and llamas (and guest pets) on parade. Leashed pets are welcome too!
Hours for the festival are 10-6 on Saturday and 10-5 on Sunday. Admission is $12, $10 for seniors (65+), and kids get in free. There is plenty of free parking available, and the festival is handicap accessible. All festival proceeds benefit Bodega Bay Area community services.
