Hundreds of northern Californians flocked to Bodega Bay last Saturday to taste the clam chowder at Chowder Day in Bodega Bay. Visitors were also pleased to have numerous gray whale spottings from Bodega Head with the assistance of the Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods and to take home the freshest Dungeness crab from local fishermen. A number of locals commented that they discovered new restaurants, and everyone was surprised that clam chowder could have so many pleasing varieties of flavors. Congratulations to Carol and Tony Anello of the Spud Point Crab Company, who received the greatest number of positive comments, and will be honorary judges again this year at the Chowder Challenge at Gualala's Redwood Coast Whale and Jazz Festival on Saturday April 7 starting at noon. Dolores Jones, owner of Dee's Bayside Deli and Catering, in her first year in Bodega Bay, gave the Tides much competition to tie for second with their creamier more traditional chowders. Dee's is a welcome addition to our luncheon establishments and popular caterer too. The Tides can always be depended upon for a rich and flavorful soup. The most interesting comments were for Claudio's Trattoria, where Betsy and Claudio
charmed the public with their beautiful new restaurant and a Manhattan tomato-based
chowder, no surprise for those who know Claudio. Claudio and Betsy were away from
Sonoma County for nearly ten years after many years of success in their earlier
Sebastopol restaurant. Welcome back! Many also commented on the warmth of the staff,
especially Maren, Rick and Sophie Power's darling young daughter, who greeted guests
at the Boathouse. The Sandpiper, with their chowder made famous by their Tee shirts stating “Please don't eat the chowder … Savor it” was still the favorite of many. Visitors asked about past participants- the Bluewater Bistro at the Links at Bodega Harbour, Lucas Wharf and Brisas del Mar, and whether they will be in future events. We hope so.
