Peter Fimrite at http://www.sfgate.com is reporting that Oceana, the Center for Biological Diversity and Shark Stewards – have filed a petition with the National Marine Fisheries Service seeking special protection for the genetically distinct Northeastern Pacific population of the toothy predators, which includes sharks that lurk off the coast of San Francisco.

These great white sharks are big, scary and ferocious, but California’s great white sharks are so rare and crucial to the ecosystem that they should be listed under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, a coalition of environmental groups said Monday.
