If you’re expecting fireworks and crowds, Bodega Bay isn’t your destination. Instead, expect a low-key coastal celebration with kites, boats, and open water.
What to Do in Town
Bodega Bay traditionally offers:
- Kite displays and beach activities at Doran Regional Park
- Harbor and boating festivities, including boat parades and kayaking events
- Tide-pool walks, harbor-view picnics, and local art activities
Check with Sonoma County parks and recreation departments for fireworks schedules, as many nearby towns host Independence Day events

The Kites Are the Main Attraction
Bodega Bay is known for kite flying. The area’s natural wind and Doran Beach’s open sandy spit make it ideal for flying. You’ll see giant octopus, whale, fish, and dragon kites, along with families flying traditional kites and professionals performing synchronized routines. The American Kitefliers Association has hosted events here because of the reliable coastal winds. Best viewing: late morning through mid-afternoon.
Bring a jacket. Even in July, Pacific winds make it cooler than inland Sonoma County.
